Forensic Nurses

My service to IAFN has always been an honor for me and an opportunity to give back to my colleagues who have been there for me during my nursing career.  The committees on which I have served have been a springboard to connecting with other forensic nurses, growing as a nurse and seeing forensic nurses through the eyes of others.  This has expanded my ability to care for patients, to develop educational opportunities for forensic nurses, and to advance my scholarship.

Joint Position on Universal Access to Anti-HIV Medication

The Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC), International Association of Forensic Nurses, National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV), and National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) recommend that systems be established to ensure that survivors of sexual assault have universal access to medications to prevent HIV following rape. In too many communities, access to these medications is lacking or inconsistent.

In summary the above mentioned organizations recommend that:

  1. Health care providers treating sexual assault patients include HIV risk assessment and potential prophylaxis as a standard component of the medical-forensic examination.
  2. Anti-HIV medications be available where and when patients present after sexual assault.
  3. People who have been sexually assaulted not be expected to carry the financial burden for HIV nPEP.
  4. People who have been sexually assaulted have access to advocacy and supportive services before, during and after HIV testing and nPEP provision.
